The third single off their imminent release ‘California Nights‘, out May 5th. The duo, fronted by Bethany Cosentino have certainly matured in their sound, focusing on a richer, embellished tonality. Gone are the days of a teen-girl pining for a love lost, although they have retained that characteristic excitement, and naivety to their songs. An outcome we can all be thankful for!
‘Feeling Ok‘ is the archetypal Best Coast catchy summer anthem, a form they do so well. The more intricate and subtle production enriches this, and results in a tune you’d happily hear over the airwaves, and most likely will. This song has the potential to expand their audience, without threatening to dilute their essence.
Three albums in, it is evident that the duo aren’t running out of steam with regards to their sound and song content, a fear shared by many fans of the band, especially considering the likeness of several tracks from their first album ‘Crazy For You‘. There is no other act quite like Best Coast, they are providing warmth and breeziness through laid-back pop creations.
Lyrically, it is the closest thing to a nihilistic pop song “I know it’s love that’s got me feeling ok“, croons Bethany. Never one to overstate emotions, though the message of the song is still one of elation, this actually shows why they are the perfect modern pop act, as they capture all the LA sunshine, without any of the cheese. Which is exactly what today’s listeners want.
