Chavar Dontae: Say single review

Chavar Dontae: Say

American musician Chavar Dontae began his career as the frontman for an alt-rock ensemble at home in Ohio before deciding to head down a different path in 2010. Drawing influence from industry icons such as Jimi Hendrix, John Lennon and Prince, he went on to release his inaugural EP in 2011.

In the years since, he’s received acclaim from MTV and its affiliates, as well as being named as “Artist of the Day” by the world famous network for his short film/music video, “On My Way”. Now he’s hard at work on another compilation, which is due to drop in the autumn. In the meantime though, its lead single “Say” has arrived to offer a taste of what to expect from the record.

Soft and stirring synths start the song ahead of a warm refrain that’s full of feeling and fervour. The tempo and pace pick up approaching the minute mark as a heartfelt harmony erupts to enthral through the cool and compelling chorus. Things tone down again afterwards when airy electronics step in to seal the gap from here to the next gentle but determined stanza.

Pressing percussion maintains a riveting rhythm underneath emotional singing on the way to a laid-back breakdown in the middle before the music and melody burst back to life to enliven across the affecting fourth minute. The entire thing stays speedy and spirited as it drifts in the direction of a forceful finish. What results is a delicate and endearing pop/rock piece that displays plenty of power and poignancy as it unfolds.

“Say” is available for pre-order on iTunes now.
