Gerrard’s 8 Greatest Anfield Moments

Steven Gerrard

This weekend, one of the greatest ever players to grace the Premier League will lead Liverpool out at Anfield for the final time in his career. Gerrard made his debut in the Premier League on the 29th of November 1998 in a fixture against Blackburn Rovers as a last-minute substitute. The Liverpool legend will now make his 502nd Premier League appearance and his 708th appearance for Liverpool in all competitions when he plays against Crystal Palace.

During his time at Liverpool, the midfielder has enjoyed an incredible amount of success as he has won 3 League Cups, 2 FA Cups, a Champions League title, a UEFA Cup, two Super Cups and the biggest honour of all he has been captain for his boyhood club for 12 years. The Liverpool hero has always been the man to save the day at Liverpool and has scored a whopping 185 goals for the club including 119 Premier League goals. Many of the number 8’s goals have occurred at home at Anfield so let’s take a look through the 8 greatest Gerrard goals at Anfield.

8. Liverpool vs QPR – 02/05/2015

This Gerrard goal deserves recognition as it was a late winner and it could also end up being known as Gerrard’s last ever goal at Anfield if he doesn’t score against Crystal Palace. The game against QPR was a tie that Liverpool made unnecessarily tough for themselves as they went 1-0 up early in the first half and had plenty of chances to finish off the game but they failed to convert them. Gerrard then stepped up to take a penalty which he missed before QPR scored an equaliser. Many players would have given up and put their head down after missing a crucial penalty but Gerrard kept fighting which resulted in him getting on to the end of a Coutinho corner and heading home to win the game for his team.

7. Liverpool v Middlesbrough – 30/04/2005

Liverpool failed to win this game and could have easily lost all three points to Middlesbrough if it wasn’t for a spectacular Gerrard strike. Middlesbrough took the lead in the 4th minute through Szilard Nemeth and Liverpool just couldn’t find their way back into the game until Gerrard stepped up in the 52nd minute to rescue a point for his team. The Liverpool captain gathered a Riise ball and produced an awesome strike as he curled a 35-yard attempt into the top left-hand corner.

6. Liverpool v Aston Villa 29/04/2006

This was another tough home fixture for Liverpool as Steven Gerrard seemed to win the game all on his own. Liverpool went ahead early on through Fernando Morientes but it was level after 58 minutes due to a Gareth Barry equaliser. Gerrard then took control of the game three minutes later and converted an Alonso corner before wrapping up all three points with an intelligent run and incredible strike into the Kop end goal.

5. Liverpool v Everton – 13/03/2012

This was another fixture where Steven Gerrard seemed to win the game all on his own as he scored the first hat trick in a Merseyside Derby game since 1982. The midfielder opened the scoring after 34 minutes when he followed up Martin Kelly’s blocked shot by chipping the ball into the back of the Everton net with his left foot. The Liverpool captain was then helped by Suarez in the second half as the striker ripped apart the Everton defence and then put it in front of Gerrard who smashed the ball home to make it 2-0. It was also brilliant link up play between Gerrard and Suarez that made it 3-0.

4. Liverpool v Real Madrid – 10/03/2009

Liverpool enjoyed a historic night at Anfield in this Champions League clash as they destroyed Real Madrid 4-0. Fernando Torres converted a Kuyt cross before it became the Gerrard show as the captain slotted home a penalty and brilliantly finished from a Babel corner before Andrea Dossena scored their 4th.

3. Liverpool v Sheffield Wednesday – 05/12/199

Gerrard was making his 23rd appearance for Liverpool when he scored his first Anfield goal and what a goal it turned out to be. Liverpool comfortably won the game 4-1 but Gerrard’s goal stood as out as a special moment at Anfield. The midfielder gathered the ball in the centre of the pitch before making a wickedly quick run towards goal where he danced past two defenders and placed the ball into the bottom left hand corner. What a way to score your first goal at Anfield!

2. Liverpool v Manchester United – 31/03/2001

The Liverpool and Manchester United rivalry is one of the biggest in world football not just English football, so for a young player to score a goal in this derby fixture is a pretty big deal. Although, Steven Gerrard did it in incredible fashion as the then 20 year old stepped up in the 16th minute of a derby fixture to score one of the finest strikes in his career. This incredible strike opened the scoring while Robbie Fowler sealed all three points for Liverpool later in the game.

1. Liverpool v Olympiacos – 08/12/2004

Liverpool had to overcome a difficult Olympiacos side by two goals to progress to the knock-out stages of the Champions League and it looked like it was going to be nearly impossible to do as they went 0-1 behind through a Rivaldo free kick after just 26 minutes. Liverpool failed to hit back in the first half but kept piling on the pressure to get back into the game which resulted in an equaliser through Sinama Pongolle in the 47th minute but the game was still just 1-1 in the final ten minutes. Youngster Neil Mellor gave Liverpool a lifeline with a cheeky finish in the 81st minute and the Anfield faithful were then on the edge of their seats knowing that one goal was enough to put them through. Steven Gerrard answered every Liverpool fans’ prayers when the ball was headed down to him by Neil Mellor and he drove home a lethal shot in the 86th minute to make it 3-1. It was this goal that epitomised what Steven Gerrard was all about as it inspired Liverpool to go on to win their 5th European Cup and bring ‘Ole Big Ears’ home for good.
