Self-proclaimed soul pop octet Gold Complex have been making waves on the Canadian music scene ever since their slick self-titled debut record arrived on iTunes in the spring of 2015. With kudos coming in from radio stations throughout their homeland and a whole host of headlining shows under their belts, the Toronto based band are hoping to expand their fan-base even further with the release of their first full length album in April. To tide enthusiasts over until then though, they’ve just unveiled a brand new deluxe edition of their aforementioned eponymous inaugural EP.
It begins with the laid-back beat of “Backbone”, which soothes the senses ahead of the extremely suave serenade of the verse. The ambience remains relaxing on the way forward as consistently smooth singing combines with calming music to create an incredibly cool introduction. “O.G.” is an equally entrancing effort afterwards, showcasing volleys of vibrant vocals atop an assortment of affable yet energetic instrumentation. The result is a remarkably riveting amalgamation of R ‘N’ B and jazz that stays enticing from start to finish.
“Cities & Lovers” is a slower but no less enlivening offering next, made up of moving melodies and mellow music. “Katrine” acts as a considerably quieter successor, the touching instrumentation and poignant refrain of which drift gently in the direction of the affecting opening of “Tread on Me”. This delicate addition manages to maintain an emotional ambience until its electronically-infused remix swoops in to serve as a sobering swansong.
Gold Complex have crafted a compilation that is the very definition of easy listening. Packed with plenty of pleasant harmonies and peaceful instrumental work, its accessible sound and altogether amiable attitude are sure to win over a wide audience. Check it out for yourself on Soundcloud now.
