Jake Gyllenhaal and director Denis Villeneuve have teamed up again to make their third movie together after having considerable success with Prisoners and Enemy. This time round, they reunite to bring to the screen Jo Nesbo’s crime novel The Son.
The Son depicts the story of Sonny Lofthus, an upcoming wrestler who suffers a breakdown after the suicide of his policeman father. He goes to prison for crimes he did not commit and upon his release he learns of some long hidden truths about his old man. He thus sets out on a journey to find those who committed the crimes he was prosecuted for and ultimately achieve justice.
Gyllenhaal will of course play the part of Sonny, a character determined to overcome grave challenges and torments. The Son is a story which has been described as dark and violent but essentially a tale of a man who simply wants the truth.
The union between Gyllenhaal and Villeneuve is fast becoming one of the most intriguing in Hollywood, akin to perhaps the likes of Scorsese/DiCaprio or McQueen/Fassbender. In Prisoners, Gyllenhaal played troubled Detective Loki and among names such as Hugh Grant and Paul Dano, the American actor stole the show. Similarly in Enemy, Gyllenhaal did an impressive job in his portrayal of two versions of himself.
The Son is being produced by Nine Stories and Bold Films with Gyllenhaal and Nesbo involved in the production themselves. Nesbo’s other famous book The Snowman is also being adapted into a film starring Michael Fassbender and will be released in 2017.
The Son will begin shooting in the short future and is set to come out sometime in 2017.
