HBO’s version of Lost, The Leftovers, is back with a new teaser trailer for the upcoming series.
The Leftovers stars Justin Theroux (American Psycho, Parks & Rec), Amy Brenneman (Heat), Christopher Eccleston (The Others, Heroes), Liv Tyler (Lord Of The Rings, Empire Records), Chris Zylka (The Amazing Spider-Man), Ann Dowd (Compliance, True Detective) and Carrie Coon (Gone Girl).
In the first series, viewers pieced together the backstory of the ‘Sudden Departure’ and watched how the rapture like disappearance of family members, affected the residents of the fictional town of Mapleton, New York.
Weird events, a mute cult called the ‘Guilty Remnant’, and strange coincidences, litter the first series. Most notably in episode 3 ‘Two Boats and a Helicopter’, as Reverend Matt Jamison (Christopher Eccleston), spends his time frantically dashing from a friend’s house stashed with cash to casinos, striking it big, getting mugged, surviving a car accident, trying to purchase back his church before the small town’s nihilist cult get their hands on it.
The Leftovers is returning this Autumn for a second season. HBO describes the set up for series 2: “More than three years ago, 2% of the world’s population inexplicably vanished. 140 million people, gone in an instant. No country, no state, no city was spared, except for one small town in eastern Texas.”
The trailer shows a long narrow desert road, clogged with a traffic tailback, stretching as far as the eye can see. Cars are lined up on one side of the road, while the other lane remains completely empty.
People wait next to their cars, seemingly content to get on with their everyday mundane activities and tasks, waiting for the traffic jam to subside.
A teenage boy rides his bike, an old lady sits in a deck chair reading, a family passes a football back and forth, while all the time, a judgement day type preacher is being transmitted from a radio sitting on top of a car’s roof.
The final shot shows car after car stationary in the baking sun, as the camera pans down to show a roadside sign that reads:
If you haven’t seen series 1, do yourself a favour and check it out, at least give the first 3 episodes a shot, then you’ll be hooked.
