Cork native Katie O’Connell has been an avid singer and dancer since infancy. Having spent her teens playing with a number of different bands, she made the decision to sign with PPM Management in 2011 so that she could really get her career going. This led to her teaming up with bassist Chris Collins, drummer James Ryan and guitarists Rory Murphy and Chris Roche to form alt-rock ensemble Lennoko.
Throwing themselves headfirst into the local live scene while writing new material, they’ve spent the last two years honing their skills at events such as the well renowned Indiependence Festival. As they continue to conquer stages around their home county, they’ve also just dropped their highly anticipated debut single, “New Beginning”. Produced by Ciaran O’Shea and mastered by Fergal Davis, it wasted no time in seizing the number two spot on the iTunes rock chart upon its July 17th release.
The track blasts into an upbeat and absorbing instrumental exhibition ahead of vibrant vocals which resonate rousingly during the verse. Guitars build a brief and biting bridge from here to an immersive chorus that’s full of life and vitality. Another energetic melody ensues afterwards as the piece paces purposefully forward.
The instrumentation cuts across the ears excitingly, having an intense impact without ever being inaccessibly heavy. The extreme enthusiasm of the execution becomes increasingly infectious as it all progresses in the direction of a rollicking riff just past the second minute. Things relent momentarily when it’s done, before a final heartfelt harmony erupts to deliver an eager ending. This incredibly catchy composition is sure to guide Lennoko towards a big and bright future. Check it out for yourself on iTunes now.
