Although it was reported late last year that Chris O’Dowd and Julianne Moore would star in director Nicole Holofcener’s Can You Ever Forgive Me?, reports are now emerging that the in demand Melissa McCarthy has been drafted in to take the lead role with Marielle Heller now in the directors chair.

Holofcener originally adapted the script from the 2008 memoir of Lee Israel, but a clash in scheduling has meant she had to step away from the project. The movie will follow Israel (Melissa McCarthy), a respected biographer who soon finds herself in dire financial straits and in a desperate bid to get back into the black, begins to forge letters of famous dead writers and celebrities. However, her work soon begins to draw the attention of the ever-increasingly suspicious FBI and in order to keep one step ahead of the law, begins to steal actual letters from libraries and selling them on the black market.

With shooting set to begin early next year, it remains to be seen as to whether O’Dowd is still attached to the project but with such a long time to wait until production begins, it’s safe to assume he should be there in some form or other.
