REWS were the band in my string of reviews today that had me saying “Yes….YESSS” and nodding appreciatively as the song stalked along, and playing it to anyone who would listen.

This is the third single from London/Belfast duo Collette and Shauna who formed REWS in 2014. The pair are already successful in their own right, with a hefty CV between them which includes a Discover Northern Ireland ad, touring with Snow Patrol, Darwin Deez, Mark Richardson (Skunk Anansie) and playing for Gabrielle Aplin. Phew. But the girls are forging on with this project.

“Shake Shake” might have a clichéd title in some people’s opinions, but the song gives two fingers up to everything. Catchy hooks and dirty guitar riffs, brilliant vocal harmonies; crashing drums and a brilliantly subtle dash of pop all come together wondrously, perfectly crafted. The video is a bit full on, but maybe it’s nice to see that rock chick hipsters can smile, and even have mad hula hoop skillz. I had to hold meself back from screeching along (not that the vocals are screechy, that’s just me).

Other praise for REWS comes from far and wide including Steve Lamacq from BBC6, Dan Hegarty from 2FM, BBC Introducing, Fergal D’arcy from Today FM and the inimitable Joe Donnelly of TXFM.

Catch the girls live next Friday the 15th in Whelan’s, Crescent Art Centre Belfast on the 16th, The Social London on the 19th or at The Great Escape Festival Brighton in May. I believe it would be a rollicking good show.
