With the Ryan Reynolds helmed Deadpool having raked in $754 million (and counting) it should come as a surprise to absolutely no one that 20th Century Fox are already planning a sequel to the 2016 smash hit. Knowing full well they had a blockbuster on their hands, negotiations have been ongoing ever since the original started pulling in eye watering amounts of cash, and now the studio has confirmed that Ryan Reynolds, writers Paul Wernick and Rhett Reese along with director Tim Miller are all set to return.
Making the announcement at CinemaCon, 20th Century Fox co-chairman Stacey Snider was more than happy to bask in the adulation from the crowd. However, they’ll face an uphill struggle with the unprecedented amount of attention the as of yet untitled Deadpool 2 will garner. Especially when you consider that the original languished in development hell for 11 years.
Nothing is known about what route the sequel will go down, with Fox possibly more than willing to inject a far bigger budget this time. However, writers Reese and Wernick going on record as stating they don’t want a seemingly endless infusion of funds, insisting that Deadpool should feel different to the other over-the-top superhero blockbusters. One thing is certain, speculation as to who exactly the main players will be are already bubbling over, with fans salivating at the mouth at the possibility of an appearance by Cable, who was hinted at during the closing credits of Deadpool.
