Sperry Alan is a musician and producer from Nova Scotia, Canada. Previous releases have included 2004’s Album-A and Open Heart, Open Mind in 2010. He has enjoyed success gigging along the east coast of North America as well as receiving local airplay and having several tracks featured in the film “The Haunting Truth About Heaven”. His newest album Before Our Time was released on April 21st.

The first track is “Hold On Tight”. It’s a short upbeat number with fuzzy guitars and an abrupt ending. Despite this, it’s quite a catchy and memorable tune.

Tracks like “Made Of Mistakes I Am” and “Rock & Roll Life” feature riffs that wouldn’t sound out of place on an early Pearl Jam record, though there are also folky elements that are brought out through Alan’s voice.

Stripped back numbers like “Give Me A Warning” and are quite vocally driven, bringing out the previously mentioned folk feel. This isn’t a bad thing by any means.

Before Our Time is a very solid release that combines alternative rock with indie folk. While it is an interesting mix and the songs are well written, it feels like a lot of the tracks are over before getting a chance to really hit their stride, five of the albums nine tracks don’t break the two minute mark for example. While this isn’t a huge deal, it would be nice to hear the songs develop more with time.
