Title: Terminator 2- Judgment Day (1991)
Director: James Cameron
Stars: Arnold Schwarzenegger, Linda Hamilton, Robert Patrick & Edward Furlong
Terminator 2 is set over a decade after the original movie and Sarah Connor (Hamilton) is now in a mental facility, where they refuse to believe her story about the murderous Terminator. Meanwhile, she is estranged from her son John (Furlong), who lives with a foster couple. One day a new Terminator, called a T-1000 (Patrick), is sent back in time to kill John Connor. Another Terminator called the T-800 (Arnie) is sent back by the resistance to ensure that the T-1000 does not succeed. As the T-800 is identical to the Terminator that relentlessly stalked Sarah in the original, she is understandably confused by his helpful nature this time around. After he breaks her out and reunites her with John, they must try and prevent the scientist who created the machines from advancing his work. Simultaneously they must dodge the ever pursuing T-1000.
Arnie gives a legendary performance as the initially stoical bodyguard. As the film moves on he begins to learn more about human emotions and humour, which enriches an already great character. He also gets to spout the immortal line ‘Hasta la vista, baby’. One annoying part of the character was his refusal to kill anyone because John Connor tells him not to. You keep wanting him to go nuts, but he never really does. Arnold himself hated this part of the character and had to be talked into by James Cameron.
Edward Furlong gives a star-making performance as the street-wise teenager. He visibly ages as the film progresses and his voice also broke during filming. Linda Hamilton scores well as the tough-nut mother, who is vastly different to the clueless young woman of the first film. Robert Patrick was plucked from obscurity for his role and went on to carve out a very decent film career.
T2 improved on the original in every possible way. The original was very good, but T2 blows it out of the water with its improved budget, awesome CGI and breakneck action sequences. Terminator 2 is a legendary film and is without doubt one of the greatest action films of all-time.
