Some twenty years after the events of Danny Boyle’s iconic Trainspotting first hit our screens, the first teaser to the hotly anticipated sequel has emerged online. To say that not a whole lot happens, well would be quite the understatement. As a matter of fact, absolutely nothing happens.
The 40 second clip features original cast members Ewen Bremner (Spud), Ewan McGregor (Renton), Jonny Lee Miller (Sick Boy) and Robert Carlyle (Begbie) staring off into the distance as Iggy Pop’s Lust For Life, the cult theme of the original Trainspotting, slowly builds up momentum alongside the speeding train.
The sequel is set to be very loosely based on Irvine Welsh’s novel sequel Porno, which also saw the majority of the original characters make some form of a cameo as they made a foray into the world of pornography (clue is in the title I suppose). Boyle himself had wanted to make a sequel since 2009, but wanted to wait long enough for the cast to have visibly aged enough to portray the characters again. He has also been quite critical of Welsh’s novel sequel, which he described as “not a great book in the way that Trainspotting, the original novel, is genuinely a masterpiece”. It will be interesting to see how much of the source material Boyle has stayed true to.
Trainspotting 2 is currently scheduled to appear on cinema screens in late January 2017.
