Two years have passed since Dawn of the Planet of the Apes, the sequel to the 2011 surprise hit Rise of the Planet of the Apes and audiences have finally received their first teaser taste of the upcoming War for the Planet of the Apes with a digital billboard advertisement in the heart of Times Square.

The teaser comes ahead of this weekends New York Comic-Con panel, where further details are expected to be revealed. The trailer itself doesn’t reveal a whole lot other than Andy Serkis’ Caesar uttering “war has begun”, so expect it to follow a similar story arc to that of the 1968 movie starring Charlton Heston.

Obviously Andy Serkis returns as Caesar with Woody Harrelson who will be portraying his arch nemesis the Colonel alongside Judy Greer, Steve Zahn and Gabriel Chavarria. Serkis has gone on record by saying; “…the most psychologically intense and physically challenging part of this arc. It was a very testing and very ambitious project.”

None of the cast from the first two movies (James Franco, Tony Kebbel, Jason Clarke, Freida Pinto) are expected to make a return.

War of the Planet of the Apes will hit cinemas nationwide on July 14 of next year.
