Having previously shared the big screen with great success in Talladega Nights and Step Brothers, Will Ferrell and John C. Reilly will once again team up in a new comedic twist on the Sherlock Holmes story, Holmes and Watson.
It seems as though Hollywood is still convinced that the story of Arthur Conan Doyle’s iconic detective and his assistant still has drawing power, even though there is certainly no shortage of adaptations of the tale in recent times from Guy Ritchie’s franchise to the BBC’s take on it. However, Sony believe that a Ferrell/Reilly helmed comedy could be a potential franchise. Etan Cohen, who worked alongside Ferrell in the so-so Get Hard, has been drafted in to direct the movie using a script he penned. It’s a risky move by Sony going with Cohen, as his CV is very hit and miss (Tropic Thunder, Madagascar: Escape 2 Africa, Men in Black III).
It’s not the first time Will Ferrell has been attached to a Sherlock Holmes project, as going as far back as 2008 saw him attached to portray Watson alongside Sacha Baron Cohen (as Holmes). Having wrangled in development hell, it appears as though that movie has evolved into Holmes and Watson, with the roles reversed and Reilly replacing Baron Cohen.
Shooting is scheduled to begin in late November with no release date currently penned in.
